Until August 26th the window at 165, Ladbroke Grove (former Ion Bar) will have the exhibition Untold Stories by Unseen Objects on display. North Kensington is the theme that underpins a collection of objects retelling a historical time line of the neighbourhood.
North Kensington is featured in many books about London history. It is the area that has pioneered street market regulations, tower blocks and community groups but it has also been the scenario of social revolutions, fights, parties and movies, such as the black riots, Cochrane’s murder, Notting Hill Carnival, new music scenes and the fictional romance of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in Notting Hill.
The exhibition revives these moments in history through personal stories, giving a new and insightful perspective of the neighbourhood and its community.
The stories range from personal moments exploring the neighbourhood, such as Annie and her visits to the Kensal Green Cemetery, or Bryan that experienced a different Notting Hill Carnival as a resident; but there are also historical moments being told by people that lived them, such as Gill that was involved in the painting of the Westway in the 70’s which resulted in the creation of one of the biggest murals in Europe at the time. For each story, an object has been chosen to perform as storyteller.

The exhibition is part of a bigger project called Collective Collection: Things That Tell Stories. This is the second iteration of the community project that intends to engage new audiences in recalling histories and creating an exhibition. The project was funded by RBKC Arts Award in the past and is presently being funded by the Lottery Fund for Well London.
