Mock The Opera Protest @ Holland Park
A protest is taking place tomorrow at the Holland Park Opera to highlight cuts by the RBKC.
Protesters claim the Opera continues to be heavily subsidised by the council while vital public services have been cut. They say RBKC is making huge cuts to public services with an underspent on vital services by a shocking £83.7 million since 2010. Social Services are facing further cuts in the austerity binge where thousands have been cut from homelessness prevention schemes. The Council says there is no money but continue to underwrite huge losses made by Holland Park Opera whilst sitting on obscene reserves of over £280 million. On top o this they even paid local (working) taxpayers an "efficiency dividend" at a cost of around £7.5 million.
Protesters believe there is no justification for these cut and they’ll be protesting outside Holland Park Opera as a way of highlighting how RBKC squeezes the vulnerable to fund indulgence.
One of the local organisations involved in the protest is the recently formed Westway23 in response to the planned re-development of Portobello Green by the Westway Trust. Westway23 is a grass roots organisation formed of concerned local residents, organisations, traders and artists of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds, united to defend the rights of the local community of Ladbroke Grove, Notting Hill, West London in relation to the 23 acres of land held in trust for the benefit of local residents by Westway Trust.
