London Design Festival until September 26th

For London Design Festival 2010, Tom Dixon hosts Global Industry at The Dock,

a creative hub for design sponsored by Derwent London. For the week of the festival, on the spot manufacturing, international entrpreneurialism and commerce meet in Portobello Dock, Ladbroke Grove. Expect an original shopping experience, indoor and outdoor installations and exhibitions overlooking the Grand Union Canal.

International launches include Dutch design manufacturer Moooi who are opening their first UK showroom in The White Building. The space is set to showcase pieces from the latest collection including the Emperor Suspended lights and Monster chair. Also in The White Building, Steel Life showcases its latest collection created by Matteo Zetti and Eva Parigi. Made from steel and wood the collection takes inspiration from nature and the environment.

Brompton Bicycles is assembling and selling limited edition Tom Dixon copper plated bikes during the event. A select number of the specially made bikes will be available to visitors for free trials along the Grand Union Canal to Great Western Studios. Outside on the terrace a temporary cross laminated timber pavilion, specifically designed for The Dock, showcases the work of award winners from Metropolitan Works. The pavilion is an exercise in exploring digital design and techniques such as parametric modeling and digital fabrication and production. Visitors will be able to relax in the entrance to the site in a seating area designed by Belgian manufacturers Extremis.

Premiering at The Dock will be the Tom Dixon Shop selling the full Tom Dixon range of lighting and furniture as well as debuting a new collection of accessories. Tom has handpicked an international mix of concession brands to be showcased alongside the Tom Dixon range including Dutch Designer Piet Hein Eek, Areaware, Simon Hasan and New Caribbean Design.

Ateliers Ruby, the luxury motorcycle helmet brand unveils 8 limited edition Tom Dixon copper helmets and Copenhagen Lab, launches speakers originally designed by the world famous Danish designer Arne Jacobsen in 1955. Fine Cell Work sells handmade products made by prisoners from 29 British prisons to include cushions, bags and specially commissioned furniture.

The latest addition to the Tom Dixon ‘Industry’ collection is Etch, a candleholder and pendant light made from chemically etched brass. Through-out the festival, Etch will be manufactured onsite as part of a Flash Factory allowing visitors to buy hot from the production line. A collaboration with surface specialists Formica has seen the new ‘Industry’ collection tour four European cities since its launch at Salone del Mobile in Milan last April. London will be the mid-point destination for the tour this September.

Lunch, dinner and tea are served at the renowned Dock Kitchen overlooking the water by head chef Stevie Parle. The kitchen is relaunching as a permanent 80-seater restaurant designed by Design Research Studio. The new concept includes a deli, take-away coffee bar and private dining room. Visitors will be able to relax in the entrance to the site in a seating area designed by Belgian manufacturers Extremis.
