PORTOBELLOs BEST KEPT SECRET: THE 20TH CENTURY THEATRE.
Speakeasy is the first of a new series of events to be held at the 20th Century Theatre - a hidden jewel in the center of Portobello. The theatre was built circa 1860 and remains one of Londons ghost theatres. In its heyday, it played host to memorable theatrical performances including Lawrence Oliviers acting debut, Margaret rutherford, Rex Harrison, Sir Henry Irving and many more. It is also reputedly the first English theatre to hold a performance of Oscar Wildes outlawed and infamous Salome which included a scene whereby a young girl kisses the beheaded John The Baptist! Charles Dickens also first read from Great Expectations within the theatres walls.
The theatre now has a new lease on life under the direction of Sandra Kamen as an exciting new venue for events of every nature. New manager and impressario Gus Robertson is now re-pioneering performance events at the theatre which include Speakeasy (see above), Notting Good Taste - a new comedy night hosted by Guy Pratt, and Space Oddities - a new aerial burlesque show.
