PORTOBELLO’s BEST KEPT SECRET: THE 20TH CENTURY THEATRE.

Speakeasy is the first of a new series of events to be held at the 20th Century Theatre - a hidden jewel in the center of Portobello. The theatre was built circa 1860 and remains one of London’s “ghost” theatres. In its heyday, it played host to memorable theatrical performances including Lawrence Olivier’s acting debut, Margaret rutherford, Rex Harrison, Sir Henry Irving and many more. It is also reputedly the first English theatre to hold a performance of Oscar Wilde’s outlawed and infamous “Salome” which included a scene whereby a young girl kisses the beheaded John The Baptist! Charles Dickens also first read from “Great Expectations” within the theatre’s walls.

The theatre now has a new lease on life under the direction of Sandra Kamen as an exciting new venue for events of every nature. New manager and impressario Gus Robertson is now re-pioneering performance events at the theatre which include “Speakeasy” (see above), “Notting Good Taste” - a new comedy night hosted by Guy Pratt, and “Space Oddities” - a new aerial burlesque show.

Description

 20th Century Theatre

The 20th Century Theatre is a liberated landmark that offers an unparalleled event location. This fascinating and visually stunning space provides a refreshing change and the opportunity to create a unique environment for an unforgettable experience.

“The theatre’s wonderful character makes it the perfect backdrop in which to stage an event with panache. You name it, the theatre has done it – from haute couture shows for dogs (yes, really) to perfume launches with Cirque du Soleil acrobats hanging from the ceiling, to publishing parties for Jamie Oliver and textile exhibitions by local resident Darcey Bussell.”

With its white walls, wooden floor and high atrium ceiling, the 20th Century Theatre is a blank canvas to be transformed into the perfect setting for your event.
