17-year-old Eliza Rebeiro is hosting an anti-gangs event in London on Thursday evening (January 20) as part of her Lives Not Knives campaign for Channel 4’s Battlefront.

Roll Deep are playing a special gig to be filmed for T4 at The Tabernacle on Thursday 20 January. The concert, which is being filmed for the Battlefront TV show on T4 (airing 29^th of January), will see chart-topping grime act, Roll Deep, taking to the stage as the evening’s headliners and T4 host, Miquita Oliver, on-hand to capture the backstage excitement.

As big supporters of Eliza’s award-winning campaign, Roll Deep joined Eliza in her hometown, Croydon, last week to attend a Lives Not Knives workshop at St Mary’s primary school. Whilst in Croydon, where Eliza and friends have witnessed all-too-regular gang-related attacks, Roll Deep also held an X Factor-style open audition, where they selected three support acts for Thursday night’s gig from a number of talented, inspirational locals.

Roll Deep’s Manga comments: “We got involved with Eliza’s campaign because we realised when we were young that you can easily get distracted by gangs and caught up in that culture.

“As members of Roll Deep, we took a different route and got involved with music. By helping with Eliza’s campaign we hope to be able to show young people that there is another way and that you can do something else with your life.”

The gig, taking place at The Tabernacle in Notting Hill, is about spreading awareness of Eliza’s Lives Not Knives campaign as well as a thank-you to those who have supported it thus far. As such, the audience will be comprised of invited guests and competition winners who entered via Eliza’s campaign page on battlefront.co.uk.

Eliza’s campaign is all about dissuading young people from getting involved in gangs. It’s about reaching schoolkids before they’ve been tempted by gang life and showing them the real dangers and perils it poses them and their loved ones. To achieve this, Eliza has recruited a team of Lives Not Knives mentors – inspirational young people who have either been in gangs themselves or affected by gang violence – who visit Croydon primary schools and hold gang-focussed workshops.

The scheme has been a huge success and has since been rolled out across several schools in Croydon. Talks are now in place about rolling the scheme out across additional boroughs of London.

Since starting her Battlefront campaign in June 2010, Eliza has amassed thousands of supporters, including high profile ones such as Plan B, Professor Green, Kidulthood writer/director Noel Clarke, and Home Secretary Theresa May.

Eliza has also won a string of prizes and accolades including the coveted Diana Award (founded in 1999 by the Diana Memorial Committee to act as a lasting legacy to Princess Diana’s belief in the power of young people to change the world) and a Philip Lawrence award, which celebrates the positive difference that young people are making in their communities all over the country.
