‘Inside the Revolution’ at the Inn on the Green

Tipping Point Film Fund and Alborada.net will jointly host an evening of Latin American music and a screening of Pablo Navarrete’s 2009 documentary ‘Inside the Revolution: A Journey into the Heart of Venezuela’, on Tuesday 26 October at the Inn on the Green in Ladbroke Grove.

The film starts at 7pm, costs £5 (£3 conc), and will be followed by a Tipping Point Film Fund hosted Q&A and panel discussion with the director, Pablo Navarrete, and editor-in-chief of Pambazuka News, Firoze Manji. From 9pm, there will be Latin and African music from acclaimed Afro-Venezuelan percussionist, William Cumberbache, and Movimientos’ DJ Arias.

This event is collaboration between Tipping Point Film Fund and Alborada.net. Tipping Point Film Fund is a not-for-profit cooperative drawing on public support to back challenging, truth-telling cinematic documentaries with ambitious international campaigns. Alborada.net is an independent website covering Latin American politics, media and culture.

All tickets must be purchased on the night.

Inside the Revolution: A Journey into the Heart of Venezuela
“…a rare film about Venezuela, a country in extraordinary transition. Watch this film because it is honest and fair and respectful of those who want to be told the truth about an epic attempt, flaws and all, to claim back the humanity of ordinary people.”
– John Pilger (Journalist, author and documentary filmmaker).

Filmed in Caracas in November 2008, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of Chavez’s controversial presidency, this feature-length documentary takes a journey into the heart of Venezuela’s revolution to listen to the voices of the people driving the process forward. The film traces the recent history of Venezuela, before and after the election of Hugo Chavez to the presidency, using archive material and interviews with Venezuelans living in the barrios of Caracas who are involved in community and social movements.

Post-film discussion and Q&A with Pablo Navarrete and Firoze Manji
After the screening there will be a discussion with the film’s director, Pablo Navarrete, exploring the Venezuelan experience in particular, and also the wider topic of how Latin America’s political landscape compares and contrasts with a Pan African one. Joining Pablo Navarrete will be Firoze Manji, a Kenyan activist with more than 30 years experience in international development and human rights. He is also founder and executive director of Fahamu as well as founder and editor-in-chief of
Pambazuka News, an open-access, pan-African email and online newsletter for social justice.

Music from 9pm with William Cumberbache and DJ Arias
The evening will include classic and contemporary Latin and African music. For those who do not wish to attend the screening there will be Latin music, playlist by
Movimientos, in the bar between 6-9pm.

Pablo Navarrete, Director of ‘Inside the Revolution’ said: ‘After the global financial crisis there has been widespread feeling that ordinary people are paying for the irresponsibility of the banks and other corporations. I believe that people in countries like Britain are beginning to explore alternatives to the status quo, and Venezuela under the Chavez government has been trying to build an alternative - but the coverage it receives from mainstream media is overwhelmingly hostile. With ‘Inside the Revolution’, I wanted to try and offer a less simplistic view of events in Venezuela and provide a platform for the voices of the people driving the process forward.

I’m delighted to be showing the film in conjunction with Tipping Point Film Fund, a dynamic organisation at the forefront of showcasing how powerful films can be in connecting people to the major talking points around the word today’.

Tipping Point Film Fund co-founder, Deborah Burton said: ‘We are delighted to be partnering with Alborada for a truly social, political and Latin experience through film and music. Pablo’s film delivers an invaluable insight into Venezuela and how this connects or not with the African experience will be fascinating to discuss. Combined with the DJ’s joining us after the screening, we have a really lively and vibrant night to look forward to, and a great venue, The Inn on the Green, to partner with’.

The Inn on the Green is located at 3-5 Thorpe Close, W10 5XL (under the Westway flyover and above the Portobello Green Fitness Club). The nearest tube station is Ladbroke Grove on the Hammersmith & City line, and buses to Ladbroke Grove include 52, 452, 23, 7, 70, 295, 316, 228.
