This week at the Pop-UP‏

 By Piers Thompson

There is a cracking programme this week at the now legendary Portobello Pop-Up Cinema on Acklam Road under the Westway. Friday night (22 Oct) there is a special screening of  Exit Through The Gift, Banksy's debut movie starring Thierry Guetta.

Legs pumping and arms waving, Guetta narrates the story of his rise to infamy in the art world under the guise of his newly created alter-ego, Mr. Brainwash. Like evrything else Banksy turns his hand to, it's very good.

Planet Of The Apes on Saturday (23/10) is followed on Sunday (24/10) by a rare showing of Sound Business. Acclaimed documentary maker Molly Dineen will introduce this absolutely stunning, and charismatic portrait of the early 80’s Brixton sound system scene. Featuring Sir Coxsone and a young Levi Roots this heartfelt insight wonderfully captures the pioneering dub-plate and toasting skill of Britain’s most influential sound system. A rare groove, not to be missed.

Tuesday (26/10) is the UK Premiere of Story of F***, a snappy satire about the music industry from first time British film-making cousins Adam and James Abadi. It stars Tamsin Egerton, Finlay Robertson and Lee Boardman, and is a weird rock and roll romp featuring sex, drugs, alien abduction and crocodiles! Wednesday (27/10) is a Chubsters Surprise Film Screening. On Thursday (28/10) James Static, Pop-Up contributor and organizer of the London Filmmakers' Network runs a special short film screening night featuring favorities from the archive and new submissions.

Friday brings a special treat. Julian Temple and producer George Hencken introduce Requiem For Detroit (Director's Cut), a lyrical exploration of the rise and fall of Detroit. Julian made the recently re-discovered classic, Absolute Beginners, adapted loosely from Colin MacInnes' tale of the first teenagers, set in Napoli which, of course, is Notting Hill. It was a huge success when revived at this Summer's Vintage festival. Julian's work reworks and re-examines the myths of rock'n'roll and the avant-garde. Requiem For Detroit absorbs andf delights as a portrait of the city everyone is suddenly talking about.
